Pugh plays a nurse looking into the case of a girl who says she hasn’t eaten in months in the period drama on Netflix.
With Netflix’s “The Wonder,” Florence Pugh has another eagerly anticipated psychological drama on her hands after the drama of “Don’t Worry Darling” (almost, nearly, please make it stop).
The movie, directed by Oscar-winning Chilean Sebastián Lelio, examines the Victorian phenomenon of fasting girls, in which young women claimed to have survived extended fasts thanks to supernatural intervention.
The Wonder, based on the same-titled book by “Room” author Emma Donoghue, follows English nurse Lib Wright (Pugh), who is sent to a remote, passionately religious Irish hamlet in 1862, 13 years after the Great Famine had ended.
There, she is given the responsibility of keeping an eye on 11-year-old Anna O’Donnell (Kla Lord Cassidy), who claims to have gone four months without eating and has only survived on “manna from heaven.”
According to the synopsis, “As Anna’s health rapidly declines, Lib is determined to discover the truth, questioning the faith of a community that would want to keep believing.”
Pugh strives to save the child’s life in the face of authoritarian officials as questions of religious faith and science collide with troubling outcomes, according to the trailer that was published on Tuesday. The part is another substantial and possibly Oscar-worthy one for Pugh.
As resentment between the nurse and the locals mounts, Pugh’s character states, “I’m here to find out the truth,” in the video. Will you assist me?
Pugh posted the trailer for this movie on her Instagram account this week with a positive remark, obviously having no reservations about promoting it, unlike with a particular other project.
Here it is, she concluded in her letter. “I’m really happy to share this trailer. Thank you to everyone who patiently waited; our baby is now here. Our fantastic little Wonder film.
The Oscar nominee spoke candidly about the process of making the movie earlier this year.
She posted on Instagram in August, “We’ve been wandering about the Irish hills for the last week and it’s genuinely been a great start to a lovely and exciting film.” What a great story to get lost in, what a great group to work with, and what a great director in Sebastian Lelio to guide us! It will be enjoyable.
Tom Burke, Niamh Algar, Elaine Cassidy, Toby Jones, Ciarán Hinds, Dermot Crowley, Brían F. O’Byrne and David Wilmot also star in the film, which hits theaters Nov. 2 before arriving on Netflix on Nov. 16.
