THE NUMBERS FOR “TOP GUN: MAVERICK” THE RECORD-BREAKING MOVIE: 10 TOP FACTS

We want to express our gratitude to Tom Cruise, our directors and cast, Paramount’s marketing and distribution teams, and the legions of both new and longtime “Top Gun” fans who keep showing up to enjoy this incredible movie as we celebrate this great success and the film’s massive effect.

Cruise had never had a bigger opening despite being one of Hollywood’s biggest stars since 2005’s “War of the Worlds” with Dakota Fanning. During that year’s Memorial Day weekend, the Steven Spielberg-directed science fiction movie brought in $64.9 million.

‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout’ made $61.2 million in 2018, according to Comscore, but none of Cruise’s other movies have opened to more than $60 million.

Despite years of obstacles brought on by the COVID-19 epidemic, Cruise declared that “Top Gun” would “never” make its theatrical debut on a streaming network.

When questioned about whether he felt under any pressure to make the movie available in any way on a streaming service, Cruise told the crowd that it would never happen.

According to quotes from Cruise on The Hollywood Reporter, “That was not going to happen ever.” That was not going to occur.

Every time the film’s release date was postponed, Cruise remembers picking up the phone and calling each member of the ensemble to reassure them to keep their cool and concentrate on what they had produced.

The movie was brought up two days early by Paramount for a release on June 24, 2020, however that date was later shifted back to December 23 days before the global shutdown in March 2020. Due to the coronavirus epidemic, Cruise’s schedule, “Mulan,” and “Tenet,” which were set for release on the same dates, the movie received another schedule modification in July 2020, pushing back the release date by one year.

When the movie was again postponed in April 2021 for a November release and again in September 2021, executives ultimately settled on the May 27, 2022, release date, the studio’s scheduling issues persisted.
