Hallowe’en is almost upon us – so let Bob Dylan soundtrack your October 31st.
The origins of the festivities are Celtic, initially popular across Ireland and Scotland before being exported to the United States. Known as Samhain, this time of year represents a thinking of the veil between two worlds, the Living and the Dead.
No stranger to the uncanny himself, Bob Dylan is seemingly a big Hallowe’en fan – that shouldn’t be too surprising, given his predilection for all things Scottish.
Dylan’s famed Theme Time Radio hour once played host to a Hallowe’en special, in which the bard held court on spooky season.
Looking back to his youth before skipping through the decades, it touched on American paranormal belief – in particular viewed from the language of the blues – and boasted songs from Albert King, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, and more.
In one curious aside, Bob Dylan waxed lyrical about the inventive nature of children’s costumes – including a curious shout out to SpongeBob SquarePants.
Revisit that moment below.
Thankfully, the internet never forgets – check out the Hallowe’en special of Theme Time Radio hour below.
