‘Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II’ will make use of the divisive SMS Protect mechanism from Blizzard.

Players of “Overwatch 2” haven’t been too fond of the verification tool.

In order to play the upcoming Call of Duty, which will be released on October 28th, players will have to link a phone number to their Battle.net account. According to a recently updated support page discovered by PC Gamer, “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, freshly formed Overwatch 2 accounts, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare accounts require a phone number.”

Following a week of criticism around SMS Protect, the phone-linking technique used by Overwatch 2 and shortly Modern Warfare II, news of the necessity has surfaced. Blizzard announced it would reduce the requirement following a rocky launch in which a DDoS assault prevented many players from playing Overwatch 2 on the game’s debut day. The studio has changed its prior statement that all players would need to connect a phone number to their Battle.net account to only apply to new Overwatch players. The scheme has generated some debate in part because “some pre-paid” numbers could not be utilised with SMS Protect. Players using service from mobile providers like Cricket Wireless discovered they couldn’t play the game prior to Friday.

It’s not yet known whether everyone who wants to play Warzone 2.0 will need a mobile phone number when it launches on November 16th. Since 2020, Infinity Ward has mandated two-factor authentication for all free-to-play Warzone PC players. Activision Blizzard was contacted by Engadget for clarification and comment, but did not immediately answer.
