So, with a couple of days to spare, how else would global superstar Martin spend his Monday afternoon, but at an ODI between Australia and Pakistan?
Martin — whose band has 28.2 million followers on Instagram and 90 million monthly listeners on Spotify — was pictured in the modest crowd at the MCG alongside father Anthony and band manager, Phil Harvey.
“Rock music royalty right there in the cap, Coldplay’s Chris Martin,” Adam Gilchrist said on commentary.
“Loves his cricket, does Chris, and his father, and Phil.”
Martin often pays tribute to close friend and late Australian cricket legend Shane Warne during his gigs, including during last Wednesday night’s show.
The crowd fell silent as Martin shared a personal tribute, telling fans: “Let’s play this for Shane and his family. Our brother, we miss you.”
“Every time we come to Melbourne, it used to be fun to hang out with Shane and all the Warne family,” Martin said.
Struggling with emotion, he added, “I don’t want to talk about it too much or I’ll start to cry.”
Martin dedicated the song Sparks to Warne, with poignant lyrics such as: “I promise you this, I’ll always look out for you.”
Martin suffered a mishap during Sunday night’s show when he fell through the stage.
“He had a bit of a stumble, didn’t he?” Former England captain Michael Vaughan said in commentary.
In footage posted to social media on Sunday nightMartin could be seen plummeting through a hidden door while walking backwards on stage.
The gasps of thousands of fans can be heard as the rock star stepped backwards into the trapdoor, half disappearing below the stage.
After the incident, Martin can be heard telling fans “that’s not planned” before going on to thank a member of production staff for catching him as he fell, adding: “Holy s***, that was nearly a YouTube moment.”
The Yellow singer continued with the show following the incident and appeared unharmed.
In mid-October, singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo also fell through a trapdoor during a concert at Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena.
As the crowd gasped, she appeared a little flustered and appeared to make light of the incident, telling the crowd, “Oh my God, that was fun! I’m OK!”
“Sometimes there’s just a hole in the stage. That’s all right. OK, where was I?”
