Hogwarts Legacy fans hoping for new, future content for the game may have to amuse themselves with multiple playthroughs with different houses for a while. According to the game’s developer, Avalanche, DLC ain’t coming any time soon, if ever:
“We’ve been really heads down bringing [Hogwarts Legacy] to life,” said game director Alan Tew at IGN Fan Fest“so at the moment there are no current plans for DLC.”
Alright, so I guess he’s hedging a bit here with “at the moment” and “current plans,” but it doesn’t sound like they’re working on anything right now. But given that this game is about to sell between 10 and 20 million copies this year alone, given early projections, it sure does seem like a mistake not to release DLC for the game at some point.
The industry does feel like it’s shifted away from DLC at least a little bit compared to what it used to produce. But I’d say the “skip DLC” trend was most bafflingly exemplified by GTA 5, the best-selling game of all time by a mile, yet it never put out a single $20-40 content pack or expansion for single player, focusing relentlessly on GTA Online instead. I guess that paid off, but here, Hogwarts Legacy has zero microtransactions, no live component. So DLC is really the only option, in whatever form that might take.
I’ve heard a few suggestions for DLC passed around already among fans. Everyone is wondering why the game doesn’t have Qudditch, which seems like a pretty obvious thing they could add down the road. My guess is they just ran out of time to figure out how to make that sport compelling in the game.
I’ve heard people say they could do a Triwizard Tournament expansion, where you would represent your school against other rival students from abroad, the basis for Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, one of the best books.
It’s also possible that the directive from on high is to skip DLC and take whatever work was going to happen there and throw it into a full sequel, Hogwarts Legacy 2. A middleground idea could be something like Spider-Man Miles Morales, a new game that uses the same open world as the first one, with some additions and lots of other changes.
My guess is that we will probably see actual DLC someday for Hogwarts Legacy. Once the sales start rolling in and WB Games realizes they would really like some bonus spending attached to those purchases, I’m guessing some kind of content will end up being made and sold before we get a full sequel. But we may be waiting a while for news on this front.
