London musician and auteur Lauren Duffus returns with a new single ‘N.U.M.T.E’, out via Select Few, a subsidiary label of AMF Records, home to Alice Glass, 070 Shake, Greentea Peng.
‘N.U.M.T.E’ is Lauren’s first release since 2022 breakout tracks, ‘Habits’ and ‘Love Love Love’. It continues her after-dark experiments, fusing diaphanous vocals with a nourish breakbeat ambiance, Lauren’s anxious meditation on yearning and melancholia exists in a liminal state between the club and the lonely hours after.
In her own words, ‘N.U.M.T.E’ is “a punchy, dystopian club track featuring melancholic chords underneath r&b inspired vocals, expressing themes of longing and nostalgia.”
Duffus has built an air of mystery around her with only a handful of releases. Beginning as an experiment with production software during lockdown in 2020, her early lo-fi self-releases on SoundCloud quickly caught the attention of tastemakers.
This led to a place on NTS’ esteemed artist development program and subsequent collaborations with revered underground labels such as the aforementioned AD93. Her work cites the likes of Oneohtrix Point Never and the witch house movement of the early 2010s.
‘N.U.M.T.E’ arrives with a music video directed by Stanley Brock, following Duffus as she wanders through a twilight cityscape clad in a full space suit.
Tune in below.
