New York City to Receive 2022 Stars from Michelin

As a vegan restaurant, Eleven Madison Park maintained its three Michelin stars.

According to Michelin, Daniel Humm’s Eleven Madison Park is still one of the world’s best restaurants and may be the best vegan restaurant on the planet. Critics criticised the fine dining shrine after it switched to a plant-based menu last year.

Eleven Madison Park will maintain its three-star rating from Michelin, the company’s highest honour, it was announced tonight in a stylish event in Hudson Yards by co-hosts Neil Patrick Harris and David Burtka. The recognition stands in stark contrast to reviews and articles that, after the restaurant removed almost all animal products from the menu, questioned just about every part of it.

Currently, Eleven Madison seems to be the only three-star vegan restaurant in the entire world.

This year, the infamously secretive inspectors at Michelin added a stunning 17 new eateries to the one-star list, including the vegan restaurant Dirt Candy on the Lower East Side and the Tribeca tasting menu haunt One White Street. The only Indian restaurant in the neighbourhood with a Michelin star is Semma, owned by Roni Mazumdar and chef Vijay Kumar. A handful of expensive sushi bars and contemporary Korean eateries, like Joomak Banjum in Koreatown, Yoshino in the East Village, and Noz 17 in Chelsea, have also been added to the list.

The inspectors removed 11 restaurants from the one-star list, including Marea on Central Park South and Peter Luger, the upscale steakhouse that received a scathing Pete Wells rating prior to the pandemic. Additionally dropped from the list were ZZ’s Clam Bar and The Italian American Carbone, giving Major Food Group, which is now experiencing fast growth, no Michelin stars in New York City.

The three-star category, which in addition to Eleven Madison Park also contains the lavish Per Se, the French Japanese Chef’s Table at Brooklyn Fare, the French seafood opulence Le Bernardin, and the sushi restaurant Masa, the most costly in the nation, was left unchanged.

Only two recently opened restaurants received two stars from Michelin: Saga, a tasting menu establishment 60 stories above Crown Shy, and Al Coro, an Italian fine dining establishment that debuted just three months ago (whose own one-star rating was renewed on Thursday evening). Following the closure of L’Atelier de Jol Robuchon, Blanca, and Ichimura @ Uchu, there are now 13 restaurants in New York City with a two-star rating.

According to a Michelin representative, the rating process for this year’s guide was carried out between spring 2021 and summer 2022. One star signifies “high quality cooking, worth a stop,” two stars denotes “excellent cooking, worth a detour,” and three stars denotes “exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey.”

Bib Gourmand establishments are those where customers can order two dishes and a glass of wine before tax or tip for $49, up from $40 in 2021. This category was partially unveiled last month.

The Michelin Guide introduced three new awards this year: the excellent cocktail award, given to Philip Dizard of Noda; the pastry chef award, given to Kelly Nam of Joomak Banjum; and the mentor chef award, given to Eric Ripert, the co-chef of Le Bernardin. Nikita Malhotra of Momofuku Ko and Charlie Mitchell of Clover Hill won the guide’s young chef and sommelier awards, which were first given out in 2021, respectively.

The Red Guide has had an extremely busy year, which will come to a close on Thursday. Michelin historically revealed the names of its award nominees once every year, but starting in November, the company deviated from custom in an apparent effort to generate attention all year long.
