“Smile” expands with significant overseas growth as it approaches $100 million worldwide at the box office

As the horror film from director Parker Finn experienced a spectacular 19% increase in holdovers at the worldwide box office in its second weekend, Paramount’s Smile is positively beaming from ear to ear. The weekend’s earnings were $17.5M in 61 markets, resulting in an offshore cume of $40M and a global total of $89.9M.

The rise in foreign audiences is absolutely astounding; even Paramount’s Top Gun: Maverick, the year’s top grosser, slowed down (albeit very marginally) in its second frame. According to reports, word of mouth, not a specific festival or weather condition, is what is driving this picture.

This frame’s lone brand-new market was Korea, where Smile made its debut at No. 5 with $335K at 355K venues. The second session in Mexico brought in $2M, a 26% increase over the first, ranking No. 1 for a local cume of $4.2M.

The UK also made $2M in its second period, up 25% from the debut and debuting at No. 1. Local cume is $5.4M.

The biggest standout is perhaps Germany, which doubled the first weekend. The current total is $3.4M.

Other markets cheering Smile include Spain ($2.2M/+51%), Australia ($2.3M cume/+43%), and France ($3.2M cume/+8% from previous weekend).

As previously mentioned, Ticket to Paradise from Universal/Working Title had a great fifth frame with $10.6M. It presently leads The Lost City, House of Gucci, and Last Christmas in the tracking and has an offshore cume of $60.6M before its October 21 home release.

This weekend, France had a $1 million opening. Also above comparisons is Mexico. At $800K, Italy was by far the leader. With a No. 1 start of $200K, Hungary provided the market’s best opening for any movie featuring Roberts or Clooney.

In holds, the UK has made $7.5M, Germany has reached the same total, and Australia has made $8.6M through Sunday, surpassing the lifespan of Last Christmas and House of Gucci.

In other news, Don’t Worry Darling by New Line/Warner Bros. made $6.1M in 66 markets this session. It enjoyed a No. 1 $2.2M debut in Australia and a 45% decline in holdovers (including previews).

With $5.4M this session, TriStar Pictures/The eOne’s Woman King expanded its worldwide release. With a global cume of $64.1 million and an international cume of $10 million.

With $1.5M, the UK (where eOne releases) led all new markets (including previews).

United Arab Emirates, with $500K, led the Middle East region debut (through SPRI) with $1.3M.

Strong holdover business has resulted in Brazil’s decline of only 15% and France’s decline of only 18%.

It’s fairly mediocre in China. Home Coming, the fresh release from last week for National Day and before the party congress, added roughly $22M for a $162M cume after two days. These are not market-boosting numbers.
