For live service games, a larger playerbase is crucial.
Games from the PlayStation Live service may be released on the PC on the same day as the PlayStation launch, while other game types may take at least a year.
PlayStation CEO Hermen Hulst stated, “I think going forward, we’ll see at least a year between our own platform, PlayStation, and on the PC platform…possibly with the exception of live service games,” in an interview with YouTuber Julien Chieze.
“Live service games are a little bit different in nature,” he explains, “because when you go live, you want to have a really strong community and extremely high participation. We might partner with PC and the PlayStation platform day and night in the case of our live service offers.
With titles like Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War, Days Gone, and Marvel’s Spider-Man, PlayStation has pushed farther into the PC market. This month also sees the PC releases of Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, and The Last of Us Part I.
Since studios like Haven are currently working on a live-service title and Naughty Dog is creating a multiplayer game set in the world of The Last of Us, PlayStation is also attempting to grow its live service and multiplayer games. According to reports, Sony is also developing a multiplayer game set in the Horizon setting.
The PlayStation indicated that even though it is experimenting with more live-service games, single-player story won’t be abandoned.
