David Dawson - Harry Styles

David Dawson, the star of My Policeman, on filming sex scenes with Harry Styles

To keep the pop sensation and his scene partner apart, the actor had to put in some effort.

A team stepped in to support David Dawson when he found out he would be getting intimate with Harry Styles for the movie’s already infamous sex scenes.

At the Toronto International Film Festival, Dawson sat down in our video studio and told EW, “[Director] Michael Grandage was fantastic in that respect.” He brought in a beautiful intimacy coordinator, and the four of us discussed what we wanted those scenes to be in a supportive environment.

The veteran of British theatre who plays Patrick, a young gay guy in restrictive 1950s Britain who falls in love with Styles’ Tom, had to get used to Styles’ stardom. According to Dawson, he and Styles developed a mutual understanding and trust.

“During that, Harry and I made a pledge to always watch out for each other,” added Dawson. I can’t stress how crucial an intimacy coordinator is enough.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Styles reiterated similar comments, stating that it was essential for the entire team to convey a compassion to the sex sequences. “So much of gay sex in film is two guys going at it, and it kind of removes the tenderness from it,” Styles said, indicating that, with My Policeman, he hoped to make moments that were “tender and loving and sensitive.”

But before they reached those points, Dawson also had to contend with Styles’ huge notoriety. Dawson tells EW that “because to COVID, we had to have our meet and greet on Zoom.” “You think, How odd is life, the day Michael says, ‘You’re going to meet Harry Styles on Zoom.’ Very soon you have to get rid of the musician you knew him as previously.

Dawson claimed that Styles’ practical approach to the work made it simple. The actor claims, “He’s a good Northern lad like me.” And we had the luxury of a three-week rehearsal period to strengthen our chemistry and relationship.

TIFF hosted the international premiere of My Policeman, which will be released in theatres on October 21 and on Prime Video on November 4.
