Given that it was Apple’s first smartphone with a noticeably larger display than its predecessors, the iPhone 6, it is safe to say that many Apple users will always remember it. Although Apple no longer supports the phone, it still receives security updates and other technical assistance, albeit perhaps not for much longer. The iPhone 6 has now been included on Apple’s list of “vintage” items.
The iPhone 6 has become “vintage”
Aaron pointed out on Twitter that the iPhone 6 is officially a “vintage” device, and Apple has since confirmed this. According to Apple, a product is considered vintage if it has been out of production for more than five years but less than seven years.
Even after a product has stopped being formally supplied for up to 7 years, the corporation continues to offer replacement components and repair services. It’s interesting to note that, prior to the iPhone 6, the larger iPhone 6 Plus was already regarded as an antique device. This is due to the fact that after permanently discontinuing the iPhone 6 Plus, Apple kept selling the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 for longer in some regions.
The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, together with iOS 8, were released in September 2014. With the release of iOS 13, which needs an iPhone 6s or later, the devices were phased out in 2019. Even yet, Apple continues to release security updates for iOS 12-running devices, such as the iPhone 5s as well as the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.
The iPhone 6 has a Retina HD display, a single 8-megapixel camera on the back, and a 64-bit A8 processor with 1GB of RAM. Similar hardware can be found in the iPhone 6 Plus, but it features a Full HD display and a back camera with optical stabilisation (for the first time on an iPhone). In addition, these were the first iPhones to support Apple Pay and NFC.
Apple also included the original MacBook Pro with Touch Bar in its list of antique items earlier this year. Apple deems a product obsolete, which means it is no longer supported in terms of hardware, once it has been discontinued for more than 7 years.
