While “Unholy” debuts at No. 3 and “Tomorrow 2” debuts at No. 9, Lacy secures his first leader.

The multi-genre hit, “Bad Habit,” by Steve Lacy, moves up to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 song chart after spending four weeks at No. 2.

In the meantime, “Unholy,” by Sam Smith and Kim Petras, debuts at No. 3 on the Hot 100, and “Tomorrow 2,” by GloRilla and Cardi B, debuts at No. 9. Petras and GloRilla make their Hot 100 top 10 debuts, while Smith wins their eighth and Cardi B her eleventh spots in the top 10.

The Hot 100 combines sales data, radio airplay across all genres, and official U.S. streaming (audio and video). On October 8, 2022, all charts on Billboard.com will be updated (Oct. 4). Follow @billboard and @billboardcharts on Twitter and Instagram to stay up to date with all chart developments.

The L-M/RCA Records single “Bad Habit” is the 1,142nd No. 1 in the 64-year history of the Hot 100. Here is a closer examination of its coronation.

Sales, Streams, and Airplay

In the tracking week of September 23–29, “Bad Habit” received 40.3 million radio airplay audience impressions (up 8%), 20.4 million streams (up 4%), and 2,000 downloads (up 4%), according to Luminate.

The single, which Lacy solely produced and co-wrote, drops to No. 2 after five consecutive weeks at the top of the streaming songs chart, reaches a new high of No. 7 on the radio songs chart (up from No. 8), and, despite a rise in sales, falls to No. 38 on the digital song sales chart (down from its No. 37 best).

First Leader Lacy

With his debut on the chart, Lacy achieves his first Hot 100 No. 1. Following “Heat Waves” by Glass Animals (which spent five weeks at No. 1 starting in March) and “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” by Carolina Gaitán, Mauro Castillo, Adassa, Rhenzy Feliz, Diane Guerrero, Stephanie Beatriz, and the Encanto Cast, the song is the third leader this year by acts in their first visit to the survey (five weeks, starting in January). (In 2021, no acts led in their first appearances, although Olivia Rodrigo reigned with her first properly promoted single, “Drivers License,” while Silk Sonic led with its first release, “Leave the Door Open,” after members Bruno Mars and Anderson . Paak each had solo tracks that were successful.)

Lacy is the first solo male to top the Hot 100 with a first charted title (in a lead role) since Jawsh 685, whose “Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat),” with Jason Derulo and BTS, led the list dated Oct. 17, 2020. Since Lewis Capaldi’s “Someone You Loved,” which topped the charts for three weeks in November 2019, Lacy is the first solo male to hold the top spot on the Hot 100 with a debut entry and no supporting performers.

Since “Bad Habit” debuted on the July 16-dated Hot 100, Lacy has released two other singles that have reached the top of the charts: “Static,” which climbs 82-78 for a new best on the current ranking, and “Dark Red,” which rises 95-79 in its second week.

The songs “Bad Habit” and “Static” are on Lacy’s album Gemini Rights, which had its top 10 debut on the Billboard 200 for the week of July 30 and peaked at No. 7.

The 24-year-old Compton, California native has previously made appearances as a recording artist on other Billboard charts, first as a member of The Internet and later through collaborations as a solo artist with artists like Frank Ocean, Tyler, The Creator, and Vampire Weekend. Lacy’s victory on the Hot 100 follows those accomplishments.

On November 11, Lacy will perform in her hometown of Los Angeles as part of her current North American tour, which will then travel to Australia and Europe through December. Regarding his greatest professional achievement to far, he recently told Billboard, “I’m just grateful. It doesn’t feel like it yet.

RCA Retains the Top Spot

Since Doja Cat’s “Say So” with Nicki Minaj at the top of the chart with a date of May 16, 2020, RCA Records has held the top spot on the Hot 100 for the first time.

Since Mark Ronson, whose song “Uptown Funk!” with Bruno Mars ruled for 14 weeks starting in January 2015, Lacy is the first RCA artist to top the Hot 100 on their first appearance on the chart.

This week has been successful for both “Bad Habit” and Bad Bunny, whose album Un Verano Sin Ti spends an additional 12 weeks at the top of the Billboard 200 albums chart.

Record No. 1 for R&B/Hip-Hop, Rock, and Alternative

“Bad Habit” simultaneously tops the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and Hot R&B Songs charts for a fifth period each, as well as the multi-metric Hot Rock & Alternative Songs, Hot Rock, and Hot Alternative Songs charts for a sixth week each. As of October 2012, when Billboard’s primary genre-based song charts adopted the Hot 100’s approach, it was the first song to top all five ranks.

After spending 15 weeks at the top of the Hot 100, Harry Styles’ “As It Was” falls to No. 2—the second-shortest reign in the chart’s history. The song continues to be the most popular radio song for an eighth week (62.8 million listeners, down 1%), garnering 14 million streams (up 3%), and selling 3,000 copies (down 11%).

Notably, “As It Was” continues to hold the record for the most weeks spent in the top two spots on the Hot 100, having spent 25 of its 26 weeks on the chart (from its No. 1 debut on April 16 through the most recent survey with a date of October 8) there. The song also surpasses the previous record for the most weeks (26), ever recorded in the Hot 100’s top three, and is the first single ever to spend its first 26 weeks, or half a year, on the list all in the top three.

“Unholy,” a song by Sam Smith and Kim Petras, debuts at No. 3 on the Hot 100. The collaboration, which was released on September 22, generated 23.2 million streams, 2.8 million airplay impressions, and 12,000 sales in its first full week (ending September 29), rocketing to the top of both the Streaming Songs and Digital Song Sales charts.

The song was first teased by Smith and Petras in August, and it has since appeared in over 450,000 clips on the platform. (Its official video debuted on Friday, September 30, and any advances as a result will be included in the charts for the week ending October 15).

Smith’s seventh Hot 100 top 10 entry, “Unholy,” after their featured role on Disclosure’s “Latch” (No. 7 peak, 2014), as well as Smith’s own “Stay With Me,” “I’m Not the Only One,” “Lay Me Down,” “Too Good at Goodbyes,” and “Dancing With a Stranger” (with Normani; No. 7, 2019).

Petras enters the Hot 100 for the first time after appearing on several Billboard lists starting in 2012. (Notably, since Zayn’s “Pillowtalk,” his first charting single outside of One Direction, debuted at No. 1 in February 2016, she marks the highest debut with an act’s first Hot 100 success. Prior to that, in March 2013, Baauer debuted on top with his first song, the then-viral “Harlem Shake.”)

After “Too Good at Goodbyes,” “Unholy” debuts as Smith’s second No. 1 on Digital Song Sales and first on Streaming Songs. With her debut on each chart, Petras takes the top spot in each ranking for the first time.

Nicky Youre and dazy’s “Sunroof” drops to No. 5 from its No. 4 peak, Post Malone’s “I Like You (A Happier Song),” featuring Doja Cat, drops to No. 4 from its No. 3 Hot 100 high, Nicky Youre and dazy’s “I Like You (A Happier Song),” featuring Doja Cat, drops to No. 5, and Nicki Minaj’s “Super Freaky Girl,” which debuted at No.

The Hot 100’s No. 7 song, “I Ain’t Worried,” remains at that position, while Morgan Wallen’s “You Proof,” which previously peaked at No. 6, drops to No. 8 while continuing to be the top song on the multi-metric Hot Country Songs chart for a seventh straight week.

“Tomorrow 2” by GloRilla and Cardi B rockets to No. 9 on the Hot 100. The song was first made available as “Tomorrow” by GloRilla on September 23 and debuted at No. 2 on Digital Song Sales (9,000) and No. 3 on Streaming Songs (19.7 million), respectively, in the week ending September 29. It also attracted 3.5 million listeners via radio during that time.

GloRilla (born Gloria Woods in Memphis, Tennessee) climbs to No. 10 on the Hot 100 for the first time in her second appearance following her collaboration with Hitkidd, “F.N.F. (Let’s Go),” peaked at No. 42 in September. “F.N.F.” also peaked at the top of the August Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart.

Since being featured on Lizzo’s “Rumors,” which released and peaked at No. 4 in August 2021, Cardi B has added her 11th Hot 100 top 10 song. Prior to then, she increased her No. 1 count to five with the singles “Up” and “WAP,” which both featured Megan Thee Stallion (August 2020). (March 2021).

After spending two weeks at the top starting in late July, Lizzo’s “About Damn Time” drops to No. 9 and No. 10 on the Hot 100’s top 10.
