John McVay

John McVay, the architect of the 49ers’ dynasty and the grandfather of Rams coach Sean McVay, has died at the age of 91.

McVaywasalsothegrandfatherofLosAngelesRamsheadcoachSeanMcVay,whoseteamissuedastatementinhishonour,acknowledgingtheimpacthehadonhisgrandsonandtheteam.

McVay,whowasborninOhioin1931,beganhiscoachingcareerafterplayingcentreatMiami(OH),risingthroughthehighschoolrankstobecometheheadcoachofDayton,thentheMemphisSouthmenofthenow-defunctWorldFootballLeague,andfinallytheNewYorkGiants.
McVaywasontheNewYorksidelineduringtheMiracleattheMeadowlands,andthatfamouslosscontributedtoa14-23recordthatledtoMcVay’scontractbeingterminatedafterthe1978season.

McVayquicklyfoundanewcareerwiththeNiners,beginningasdirectorofplayerpersonnelin1979andrisingthroughtherankstobecomedirectoroffootballoperations,vicepresident,andgeneralmanager.
McVayworkedwithHallofFameheadcoachBillWalshtobuildtherostersthatwonSuperBowlsin1982,1985,1989,1990,and1995.

AccordingtotheBayAreaSportsHallofFame,oneofMcVay’sfirstassignmentswastofindWalshaquarterback,whichresultedinathird-rounddraughtpick.

OtherhomegrownplayersincludedJerryRice,RonnieLott,andCharlesHaley,andMcVaywasalsoapartofMontana’sfamousswitchtoSteveYoung,whichresultedinhisfinalchampionship.

Meanwhile,McVay’ssonTimwentontoplaydefensivebackatIndianaandeventuallyhadasonnamedSean,whowentontowinaSuperBowlwiththeRams.
