The actress expressed regret that her time working on the Hunger Games movie “wasn’t linked to such a horrific incident for me.”
Jena Malone is speaking her mind.
In an Instagram post on Tuesday, the 38-year-old actress claimed she was grappling with “a swirling combination of emotions” as she posted a photo from the French countryside, taken shortly after wrapping 2015’s The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2, the final installment in the blockbuster series.
Malone noted that while she was “so full of appreciation for this endeavor,” she was also “going through a horrific breakup and was sexually attacked by someone [she] had worked with” during the film’s production.
“A churning combination of feelings that I’m only now learning to sort through,” she went on. “I wish it wasn’t linked to such a painful period in my life, but that is the true wildness of life, I suppose. How to balance chaos and beauty.”
On Wednesday, representatives for Malone and Lionsgate did not immediately reply to PEOPLE’s requests for comment.
While she admitted that it has been “difficult to talk about the Hunger Games and [her character] Johanna Mason without feeling the sharpness of this point in time,” the Donnie Darko actress added that she is “ready to go through it and recapture the joy and accomplishment I felt.”
“I’ve worked very hard to heal and learn how to make peace with the person who assaulted me and make peace with myself through restorative justice,” Malone added in her caption.
The actress concluded her statement with “much of love to you survivors out there,” recognizing that the “[healing] journey is so slow and non-linear.”
“I’d like to add that I’m available to anyone who needs to discuss, vent, or open up previously uncommunicated regions within oneself. Please message me if you require a safe environment to be heard “She came to a conclusion.
Willow Shields, who portrayed Primrose Everdeen in the Hunger Games films, responded to Malone’s post, saying, “This post has left me speechless. I understand, and I hope you’re doing well despite the slow pace.”
Malone’s statement comes six months after she stated on Instagram that she has been “finding terms that feel more natural to explore” her sexuality, going on to write the phrases “pansexuality,” “sapiosexuality,” and “polyamory” as she continued to explore her sexual orientation.
She told The Hollywood Reporter in August that she had been thinking about her sexuality “for a while” before posting and that it “felt so great” to share it with her followers.
“The sexual journey is so amazing,” the Stepmom actress exclaimed. “All of the identity journeys are fantastic. I feel like I’m a little late to the game when it comes to having less shame. I’ve been enjoying the process of learning more about myself and others through various terms that open windows, which then turn into doors, and then I arrive at a location where I can find all of this amazing stuff out there.”
“It’s a part of humanity now to have all these exclamation points surrounding coming out, abandoning [an identity], and celebrating that space for yourself,” she continued. “It’s a truly touching and human experience. I enjoy learning more about myself, regardless of my age or experience.”
