Harry Styles began his Friday night Coachella headliner act with a simple hello. “Good night. “I’m Harry.”
We know, the people must have agreed. Thousands gathered on a polo field in Indio, California, to see him perform, and many more watched live on YouTube.
“Isn’t large in here?” Styles cracked before describing the plan. “Our duty for the next 80 minutes is to amuse you. We will do our utmost. You also have one job: to have as much fun as possible. Tonight, I want you to be the player you always wanted to be.”
Styles reverted to his pre-One Direction days of singing Shania Twain songs in the vehicle. And there she was, an hour into his act, to duet on Twain’s enormous 1999 smash “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!”
“She taught me to sing,” Twain claimed. “She said males are trash.”
“I’m a little star-struck,” Twain said. Of course, I’m a fan. I know you were a child when I wrote this song. It’s weird to be here right now, singing this song with you. I’m in love, and this song is about love. Sing about love.”
Earlier in the act, Styles debuted two new songs: “As It Was” and “Boyfriends,” in which he asks the crowd, “Who has ever had a boyfriend?” Who hasn’t had a boyfriend? “Fuck you, boyfriends.”
For the track’s premiere, Styles asked the fans to “please be gentle”. Acoustic tune with numerous harmonies about an on-off romance where “You still open the door.”
Styles later presented “Late Night Talking,” an unreleased tune. “Harry’s House” is coming out May 20.
A full moon, a ticket, and Styles had to play.
