YouTube Music tests ‘Monthly Audience Metric’ to replace Subscriber count

Flaunt Weeekly

Artist pages in YouTube Music have long included a subscriber count that’s very much carried over from the main app, and Google is now testing a new “Monthly Audience Metric.”

Google is “exploring new ways to show an artist’s presence and reach on YouTube.” This Monthly Audience count is described as a “fan-facing public metric” that will “update daily to show an artist’s total number of unique listeners and viewers across all formats in the last 28 days.”

Monthly Audience is calculated by estimating the “number of unique users globally who have viewed or listened to an artist’s content in the past month across all YouTube formats,” including YouTube, YouTube Music, and YouTube Kids. Specifically:

  • Videos, including Shorts, uploaded by the artist or their label
  • Collaborations featuring the artist’s music uploaded to other channels
  • Videos, including Shorts, uploaded by fans with the artist’s music
  • Non-music content from the artist’s channel

Monthly Audience in YouTube Music is currently in the “testing phase.” This is not yet widely rolled out and not appearing on several artists we checked today.

You might notice some artists displaying “Monthly Audience”, while others continue to show their total ”Subscribers” count during this testing phase.

The metric certainly sounds more dynamic than subscriber count, which makes more sense in context of traditional YouTube channels that release videos instead of songs/trackers. Monthly Audience is also more encompassing by also factoring fan videos.
