Same body, new number
According to reports, GoPro is almost ready to introduce its latest camera, but don’t expect a significant makeover. Instead, it looks that the GoPro Hero11 Black will look almost identical to the Hero10 and that all the significant changes will be made on the inside, as revealed by photographs and specifications first seen by WinFuture.
The largest improvement sounds like a new sensor with the “widest ever field of view on any GoPro,” according to WinFuture, which will be able to capture still photographs with a resolution of 27 megapixels and video stills with a resolution of 24.7 megapixels. (For comparison, the current Hero10 Black captures images at 23 megapixels.) Although it doesn’t sound like it, the new model will still have a maximum video resolution of 5.3K at 60 frames per second or 4K at 120 fps. Although there are currently few details available about the new sensor, even a slightly larger sensor with the same resolution may be advantageous for low-light photography.
Beyond that, it appears that GoPro isn’t fiddling with its equipment. Which really makes sense because the Hero9 was a pretty significant upgrade just two years ago, and GoPro is smart to remain with its fundamental form given how important the mount and accessory ecosystem is to the company’s appeal. A new sensor this year would suit the upgrade path as the processor was the major change from the previous year. The only difference between the Hero 10 and the Hero 11 in the leaked photographs is a blue “11” on the side where there used to be a “10.” (Because, improvements, of course!) It still has a front-facing 1.4-inch screen, a 2.27-inch screen on the rear, large rubber buttons, and the general GoPro vibe.
What GoPro CEO Nick Woodman warned investors in February would be matched with a slight improvement. According to him, the company will introduce new Hero and Max cameras this year, bringing the total number of cameras from the two lines to four. And by the end of 2023, we anticipate expanding that much more, Woodman said. The Quik app and the software inside the cameras are the main areas of concentration for the company. GoPro is working hard to broaden its product line and find ways to get its cameras into the hands of people who aren’t just your standard outdoor adventurer.
But based on what we do know so far, the Hero11 Black will always be a GoPro. According to WinFuture, the tablet may arrive as early as the middle of this month. There is no information on price yet either, which is one of the things GoPro will need to modify the most if it wants the general public to buy its little camera.
