Cate Blanchett, Christina Ricci, and Angela Bassett, who won the spotlight prize, were all present at the legendary costume event.

PEOPLE talked with Midler at the awards, where she gushed over her lookalike daughter Sophie von Haselberg’s new film role.

When asked on the red carpet if she provided the 36-year-old any guidance when she first started out as an actor, Midler told PEOPLE, “No, I didn’t give her any advise, but she did appear in this film. It’s called Give Me Pity!, and she portrays a 1970s performer who’s performing a special — remember those?”

Midler describes her daughter as “wonderful” in the film. “And she’s dressed in clothes that I would have worn,” she added. “‘Sophie, may I take that wardrobe?’ I said. It was fantastic.”

When asked if it’s difficult for Midler to watch her daughter negotiate a difficult business and follow in her footsteps, she responded it’s somewhere in the middle.

“It both is and isn’t. I believe that life is difficult for everyone “She elaborated. “It makes no difference whether you work in business or in another field. It’s quite difficult. It’s quite different. Everyone has found the last five years to be really difficult.”
