Top Gun: Maverick

Labor Day Box Office Reshuffle: ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Is No. 1, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Is No. 3

After the wild card of a $3 Saturday, the top four titles are in a completely different order.

“Top Gun: Maverick” (Paramount) reclaimed the top spot at the box office over Labor Day weekend. In fact, as we mentioned in our Sunday recap, the top four appear to be in a completely different order.

Normally, Sunday results can be easily projected from Friday and Saturday figures, but with the $3 National Cinema Day promotion, no one knew which films benefited the most from the low prices. “Top Gun: Maverick” is now #1, “Bullet Train” (Sony) is #2 (was #4), “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (Sony) is #3 (was #1), and “DC League of Pets” (Warner Bros.) is #4 (was #3).

Exact figures and order confirmation are still pending from distributors, but “Maverick” and “Bullet” performed better than expected on Sunday, while “No Way Home” and “DC” performed worse.

Estimates from studios for the four-day weekend show the same order. These are likely to last.

This reversal of initial order is unprecedented, and it included Sony’s significant overestimation of “No Way Home.” The re-release with new footage was number one on Friday but fell to number two on Saturday.

It’s a win on multiple fronts for “Maverick.” Returning to the top spot in the 15th week is a rare feat. It also includes the #1 PVOD film on home platforms. And it comes as the film’s domestic gross approaches $700 million.

According to sources, overall business for the three days exceeded the initial $52 million total. If this is the case, it suggests that the momentum from the eight million ticket buyers on Saturday, the majority of whom paid $3, carried over to the next day.

The current top ten are listed below, with specifics and clarifications added once all distributors provide final results. Other ranking changes are possible.
